A private, returning practice for the grief we carry from witnessing the world’s tragedies — a held space to name it, feel it, and mend the tears it leaves behind.
A Practice for What We Witness
There is a kind of grief almost no one gives us permission to feel.
Not the losses that happened to us — the ones everyone agrees we're allowed to mourn. This is the other kind: the grief we absorb by witnessing. A school full of children. A man dying on a street. A war, a fire, a flood, a face on the news we couldn't look away from. None of it happened to us, exactly. And yet somehow it did.
Grief from witnessing tragedy is real, and most of us are carrying far more of it than we know. We witness more than any human heart was built to hold, and because it "wasn't ours," we never feel entitled to grieve it. So we push it aside in the heat and hurry of life. But it doesn't leave. It accumulates — event upon event, unnamed and unprocessed — festering quietly beneath everything, until we're not fully available to our own lives, our people, or the world we long to help build.
If any of this lands, please know: there's nothing wrong with you. Your nervous system doesn't always draw a clean line between what you witnessed and what you survived. The weight you feel is real. And it's yours to tend.
The Tending Room is a private, quiet practice for exactly this.
It's not therapy, and it's not a quiz that tells you what you feel. It's a held space — one you enter at your own pace, in your own words, at whatever depth is right for you that day. It makes no assumptions about what you'll find. It simply walks beside you while you discover what you're carrying, and helps you begin to set some of it down.
Inside, you'll be gently guided to:
- Prepare and ground yourself, so you never do this tender work unheld.
- Return to the moment you witnessed — not to relive it, but to meet the part of you that had nowhere to put what it felt.
- Name what that part of you still needs today — and explore it honestly, without anyone deciding for you.
- Tend the tear it left, through whichever way of mending is truly yours.
- Come gently back to your life, carrying something lighter.
This isn't a one-time fix. It's a practice you return to — as many times as you need, for as many griefs as you carry — each visit turning the spiral a little higher. However much time you have is enough. You can begin in a few quiet minutes, or stay as long as you choose. You can start anywhere, any time.
Why this matters — and why it's not small. The world doesn't heal in some far-off, abstract way. It heals as we each do, one person at a time, in resonance. When you tend your own witnessed grief, you become more present, more available, more able to show up — for yourself, for the people you love, for the better world you want to see. Your private healing is not self-indulgent. It may be the most useful thing you do.
Your work here is completely private. Everything you write stays in your own browser, on your own device — it is never sent to anyone, and no one but you can ever see it.
The Tending Room is a self-guided healing practice, not therapy or crisis care. Support resources are held within it, reachable at every step.
When you're ready, the room will be here. And it will be here again, as many times as you need it — because the world isn't finished breaking, and neither is your capacity to heal.
A note about the release: The Tending Room is newly opened, and during its beta testing it's offered at a reduced price of $19 (through 12/31/26 /or for its first 50 members). Be among the first to walk this practice, and your experience of it helps shape what it becomes. When the beta closes, it moves to its standard price of $39 — but whatever you pay now, the room is yours to return to, as many times as you need it.
